This robotic arm can turn your desk into a production line

Listen up. I don’t know if you daydreamed your way through school wanting a robotic buddy to play games with, but I did. Ever since I saw automotive assembly lines I wanted my own six-axis robotic arm to teach things to. Well, my childhood dream didn’t materialize back then but now it has, with Mirobot. It’s a six-axis robotic arm that’s inspired by those automotive assembly line robots, just at desk scale. That means you can control it from the comfort of your chair, to study robotics, learn code and more. The Mirobot mini industrial robotic arm is just super cool. I mean, anyone would love to have that on their desk, although maybe not in open-plan shared workspaces, yeah? The potential liability claims alone… yikes. Still, it’s a great way to get your kids interested in robotics, or just find a second player for those long chess games. Abdominal Muscle Trainer If that sounds cool to you, head on over to Indiegogo where Mirobot is on InDemand after a successful Kickstarter campaign. It’s $366 for the Mirobot with some basic accessories or $1,999 to turn your desk into a full production line. What do you think? Need one of these robotic arms for your desk? What would you use i...

Friction Facts: Bigger pulleys really are more efficient

Pro road racers who use Berner’s uniquely oversized rear derailleur cages have sworn time and again that they reduce drivetrain friction thanks to their humongous 15-tooth pulleys. Now, Jason Smith of Boulder-based lab Friction Facts has confirmed that claim with his own independent testing. Berner-equipped racers such as Fabian Cancellara, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Philippe Gilbert and others will be relieved to know that the advantage is genuinely there – but it’s also pretty small at just 1.76 watts compared to a standard Shimano Dura-Ace setup. According to Smith, the Berner cage derives its advantages from three key principles: pulley size, cage tension and bearing friction. Smith isolated the effects of pulley size by machining 10, 11, 13 and 15-tooth pulleys to the same bearing bore and then transferring the same two cartridges between tests. Lower chain tension (i.e., the chain tension between the lower rear derailleur pulley and the bottom of the chainring), cadence, and chainring and cog sizes were kept constant throughout testing. The difference from best (15-tooth) to worst (10-tooth) was very small but still measurable at just 0.49 watts – similar to what others have c...

Day one of IFA has kicked off in Berlin and new laptops are already falling from

Day one of IFA has kicked off in Berlin and new laptops are already falling from the proverbial heavens. Acer was one of the first out of the gate by announcing a slew of new machines, including four Chromebooks. Here’s what we know. The first two are big bois, with the new Chromebook 315 coming in at 15.6-inches and the Chromebook 314 at 14-inches. Both come with full HD 1920 x 1080 displays, anti-glare wide viewing and IPS3 technology. They’ll clock about 12.5-hours of battery life. There are also two portable 11.6-inch models, the Chromebook Spin 311 and a regular 311. The Spin model has a HD touchscreen display that can be converted at 360 degrees to go into tablet, notebook, display and tent modes. There’s a stylus for this as well, but that costs extra. It’s also quite light at only 1.2kg. The non-spinning 311 is even lighter at 1.06kg and comes in ether touch or non-touch options so you can pick your poison. Both models will provide up to 10 hours of battery life. And all four new Chromebooks come with Gigabit Wi-Fi, 2x USB-C ports, MicroSD, and display output. They’re also devoid of fans and have Google Assistant built in. Down in the guts o...

14 Best Roller Blades 2019 Search Close Search Close

Every product is independently selected by (obsessive) editors. Things you buy through our links may earn New York a commission. As with so many ’90s things, roller-blading is back. Even Chris Evans does it. Even if the last time you strapped on a pair of roller blades (also known as “inline skates”) was your eighth-grade best friend’s roller-rink birthday party — there are plenty of modern options out there for all experience levels and road conditions. There’s a lot more to picking out a pair of roller blades than requesting your size at the roller-rink rental counter, though. If you’re going to invest in a pair of roller blades, you’ll want to consider the number and size of the wheels, the length of the frame (the part that the wheels are attached to), and the stiffness or cushiness of the boot, which all affect control and maneuverability. We talked to eight roller-blading instructors, retailers, and skating enthusiasts about the best blades for recreational skating, city skating, aggressive skating, and more. Several of our experts recommended roller blades from K2, a 25-year-old inline-skate manufacturer that also makes helmets and pads (don’t forget to get these too!) Pa...

Based in Taipei City in northern Taiwan, 2LOUD Custom is a small workshop run by Ma

Based in Taipei City in northern Taiwan, 2LOUD Custom is a small workshop run by Ma ‘Max’ Yicheng. Despite emerging onto the scene only a few years ago, the shop has quickly carved out an exceptional reputation. Max and his partner, Lu Yongyu, create finely crafted, one-off machines with classic Japanese style and unparalleled levels of detail. And the latest stepping-stone on their ever-shortening path to legendary status is this total stunner of a Honda CB1100. K&N filtration connects to an adapter above the throttle valve that was designed and built in-house at 2LOUD, and a Dynojet Power Commander V handles fuel management duties. The stock subframe was hacked off of the steel chassis and replaced with a shorter, upswept hooped unit. Perched atop the new framework is a custom leather saddle, while a chopped rear fender hangs off the back. The tank is a custom piece that was hand formed by Max, and the CB1100’s instrumentation takes the form of a Motogadget Motoscope Mini nestled in a cavity in the tank just ahead of the fuel-cap. Installing the new tank also required 2LOUD to relocate the fuel-pump to a custom box positioned just under the fuel-cell. The CB1100 retains th...

At its booth in the South Hall, HSA USA introduced an automated vertical feeding system designed

At its booth in the South Hall, HSA USA introduced an automated vertical feeding system designed to feed difficult-to-handle bags and pouches for conveyance to downstream labelers and printers. The system can handle zippered pouches and bags, coffee bags, foil pouches, gusseted bags, and auto-bottom cartons. According to HSA, the feeder is ideal for short runs and frequent changeovers. The system comes standard with a 3-ft bulk-load infeed conveyor. The bags are advanced to the pick and place automatically, where they are picked one at a time and placed on the pusher transfer system. The bag/pouch aligns while being pushed onto the labeling or printing conveyor. The system is fully adjustable for a variety of pouches and bags. Loading new pouches can be done while the machine is running, with no need to stop—in fact, the system is designed for non-stop operation 24/7. As HSA enumerated, the vertical feeding system features a user-friendly design that requires minimal maintenance, a PLC that controls the system and provides stored recipes and product counts, and a pick verification system comprising an infeed conveyor that advances until a bag is detected—if a bag is not det...

New boutique abattoir beefing up job opportunities in central Queensland

A family-owned pastoral company will establish its own on-farm boutique abattoir, creating in excess of 80 new jobs thanks to support from the Palaszczuk Government’s $175 million Jobs and Regional Growth Fund. Minister for State Development and Manufacturing Cameron Dick said Signature OnFarm, part of the Angus Pastoral Company, will build a $27.9 million abattoir on its Sondella station, 125 kilometres north-west of Moranbah. “The state-of-the-art, small-scale facility will be export-accredited and will be capable of servicing up to 200 head of cattle a day when fully operational, allowing the company to meet its own high-quality, specialised processing requirements,” Mr Dick said. “Due to the property’s relatively remote location, the on-farm abattoir project will also include the construction of a workers village to cater for up to 70 employees, including abattoir workers and other support staff.” The Angus Pastoral Company is a privately-owned, fourth-generation cattle breeding operation that dates back to 1960. Starting with a single farm, the company has grown into a significant supplier of beef, running 35,000 cattle across four properties on 400,000 acres of prime cattl...
